The Phoebe on Queen is an award-winning low-rise building located in the heart of Toronto’s Fashion District. It houses only 38 condos that feature open concept kitchens, floor to ceiling windows, hardwood floors and 9” ceilings. Ultimately, this stylish and highly functional building didn’t happen by accident. A lot of thought and effort went into designing a residence that would fit in seamlessly with the surrounding area.
For example, Burka Architects, the company also responsible for London on the Esplanade, felt that a new building with an overriding single architectural statement wouldn’t work on Beverly Street. Therefore, they blended Georgian formality with industrial detailing that was inspired by Toronto’s historic warehouses. They also noticed the popularity of unusual layouts in the area and incorporated a more diverse and unique design in their floor plans.
The Phoebe on Queen is actually just 1 of 3 structures in a live/work complex built by Diamante Development. The other 2 buildings, another low-rise called The Soho (at 11 Soho Street) and townhouse units called The Phoebe, span the entire city block north of Queen Street West between Soho and Beverley Streets. They are all joined by a landscaped courtyard in the middle.
The nearby Grange Park provides residents with another opportunity to enjoy green space in the city. The Phoebe on Queen is a pet-friendly building and many dog owners appreciate having a park in the area for walks. For destinations further away from 18 Beverley Street, residents have an enviable selection of streetcar stops and subway stations because of their proximity to the TTC’s Yonge-University-Spadina line.
